A Power-to-X epicentre on the  cross-border hydrogen backbone

- for green hydrogen and derivatives production

An ideal investment environment for PtX - and industrial production on surplus heat

Aabenraa is at the forefront of Europe’s Power-to-X revolution. With the world’s largest PtX plant launched and a second even larger facility in development, the municipality is rapidly becoming a center for green fuel production as well as a leader in sector integration. Substantial resources have been allocated to drive the green transition and pave the way for Power-to-X and the authority now has a proven proces for fast-tracked approval of large-scale energy plants.

Surplus heat: A unique opportunity for green growth

In municipal eyes, the growing energy sector is not just an opportunity for transitioning its traditional agriculture profile: It's a unique and powerful opportunity for sustainable growth and attraction of ambitious companies wishing to drive the transition with us. Making surplus heat available for production companies within urban farming, food and materials innovation, and wider biosolutions, Aabenraa is enabling circularity of energies as well as innovation in its existing sectors.

We facilitate synergies and sector integration

As a business forward municipality focussed on green transition and growth, we have designed end-to-end business services to enable a supported process from initial interest to post-investment support such as recruitment or spouse jobmatching. We work closely with investors to ensure they have the contacts, facilities and talent they need - so we can keep growing together.

The German-Danish Hydrogen Valley - with cross-border hydrogen infrastructure by 2030

With several PtX and green hydrogen value chains forming in the South Denmark Region and a multi-modal test centre by European Energy in Måde, two 1GW plants in planning in the Esbjerg area (CIP and MorGen Energy), a 52MW e-methanol site in Aabenraa's Kassø, storage facilities at the Port of Aabenraa, and offtaking for shipping by A.P. Møller Maersk, it is clear that Aabenraa is fast becoming the epicenter of an emerging green hydrogen cluster - or Hydrogen Valley.

By 2030, the hydrogen pipeline from Denmark to Germany will be operational with three stations within the municipality border, enabling offtake by the north German heavy industry, as well as shipping, aviation and road based transport in the wider region.

The possibilities for a production, storage and usage green hydrogen cluster and its inherent innovation potential are abundant,m and in early 2025 Aabenraa Municipality and and a consortium of regional stakeholders launched a cross-border hydrogen cluster, backed by the Regon of Sourthern Denmark and Land Schleswig-Holstein. The cluster will take action on the build-out of specific value chains and orchestrate the ecosystem's collaboration across the cross-border geography.
