Aabenraa Kommune has secured a grant of DKK 35 million from the Just Transition Fund to develop a technical water facility that will support large-scale Power-to-X production. The project is a vital step towards achieving sustainable energy integration through sector coupling and advanced wastewater utilisation.

In the heart of Southern Denmark, Aabenraa Kommune is once again cementing its leadership in the green transition. With the construction of one of the world's largest PtX plants underway in Kassø, the municipality has now received major state funding to advance its technical water ambitions. The initiative, led by local utility company Arwos in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark and several partners, including Aabenraa Port and European Energy, aims to recycle treated wastewater, thus protecting groundwater and enabling sustainable hydrogen production without straining natural water resources.

The grant underscores the importance of sector coupling — connecting energy systems such as district heating and biogas to PtX infrastructure — to create fully circular and climate-positive industrial zones. The new subsidiary, Arwos Teknisk Vand ApS, will spearhead the implementation. In Aabenraa Municipality's press release, Mayor of Aabenraa, Jan Riber Jakobsen highlights the project as a model for innovation, collaboration, and long-term green business development.
